Freshman Selection Criteria
First-time freshmen applicants are currently in high school (with or without completed college work) OR have graduated from high school and have NOT completed any college coursework AFTER high school graduation prior to entering Cal
Poly. A freshman applicant prepares to submit an application for admission consideration through these steps:
1. Choose a major to which you will apply since Cal Poly requires applicants to declare a major on the application. Applicants also must thoroughly educate themselves on their intended major’s offerings and requirements for degree completion prior to submitting an application for admission (major changes are not allowed after an applicant has been selected). Applicants should explore their intended major through:
>logging on to their VIP page;
>link directly to department websites;
>view degree program requirements from the current catalog
2. Review the selection criteria for your intended major prior to submitting an application for admission consideration since applicants compete to be selected against other applicants for the same major. Click on your intended major to view selection requirements:

3. Submit the application by the appropriate deadline because late applications are not accepted. Freshmen applicants have two options under which to apply:
>>The 'Regular Admissions Decision' option is used by the vast majority of freshman applicants and requires submitting the CSUmentor online application with the $55.00 fee, electronically by November 30th. For deadline information, you can also link here. Applicants admitted under this option will be notified by April 1st and must reply by May 1st.
>>The 'Early Admissions Decision' option allows qualified applicants to know, around mid-December, if Cal Poly will offer them admission to Fall quarter. Applicants selected will have test scores on the higher end of the scale, are in the top 5-10% of their graduating class, and have established strong academic records throughout their entire secondary education.
- Applications must be submitted by the October 31st deadline.
- Cal Poly will use the ACT or SAT1 (math and critical reading only) scores you have right now for the selection process.
- If you are selected for admission, Cal Poly needs your decision by January 15th
- Applicants not selected through this option will automatically be reviewed under the regular admission program.
Please Note: Applicants to the majors of Art & Design and Music may not apply through the Early Admissions Decision program since a portfolio or audition is required for those majors.
NOTE: All information is subject to change without notice.
